Imam Zaid appeared on CrossCurrents to discuss the opening of Zaytuna College.

Zaytuna College will be the first Islamic college in the country, based right here in Berkeley. The syllabus will include Islamic studies, and the humanities like history, and philosophy. One of the people making it happen is Imam Zaid Shakir, an African-American convert to Islam, who was born in Berkeley. Today, he’s an internationally reknowned scholar of Islam. Host Hana Baba sat down with Shakir and asked him if he expected any conflict to arise from teaching both western philosophy and Islamic ideas.

On October 25, 2008, Imam Zaid was invited to speak at Muslim Alliance of North America (MANA) event in Santa Clara, California. Imam Zaid gave advice on how to conduct yourself during an economic crisis. He also reminded us about the importance of charity especially in difficult times. Advice was also dispensed in regards to remain steadfast in our worship and have complete trust in Allah.

The Spiritual Struggle

In this brief address, Imam Zaid discusses how the essence of our humanity transcends our physical composition. It is through the heart, spirit, and soul that the human is distinguished and rendered unique in creation. To maintain that uniqueness it is important for us to remain conscious of what it means to carry the banner of Islam. The Imam reminds us that life passes quickly and it is very easy to enter upon a slippery slope of sin that we may not be able to recover from. We have to struggle to maintain our Islam, which is the essence of our humanity. Struggle though is nothing new for a believer. One aspect of our struggle as Muslims is our struggle to stay in touch with those who preceded us on this path. Our connectedness to them is a source of strength for us. That connectedness lies in part in respecting the institutions that they built and then using our spiritual strength to render those institutions relevant in our day and time.
